Nothing ruins a good hike as fast as a large, menacing bear. Now you can protect yourself on hikes wherever you go with this Frontiersman bear attack deterrent, which is proven effective against grizzlies, brown and black bears, and a variety of other large mammals. Available in 7.9- and 9.2-ounce sizes, Frontiersman deterrent boasts a range of 35 feet–up to 3 feet further than other bear sprays. This is a huge advantage when hiking, as charging bears can cover more than 30 feet per second. To use, simply spray the dual-propellant system in the direction of the bear. Each one-second blast of Frontiersman contains up to 84 percent more spray than other brands, putting a large barrier between you and the charging bear. Within five seconds, the can will be empty and you'll be protected by a heavy fog of oleoresin capsicum–a natural, resin-like substance derived from hot peppers. The substance will cause an immediate but temporary burning sensation on the bear's skin and eyes, giving you time to scamper away. Frontiersman bear repellant is effective both day and night, with a glow-in-the-dark safety wedge that prevents accidental discharge after the sun goes down. Plus, should an uninvited 800-pound guest come knocking at the door of your tent or RV, the glow-in-the-dark wedge will help you quickly locate your Frontiersman canister. Hikers can protect themselves even further by purchasing one of Sabre's unique holsters (sold separately), which allow immediate access to the firing mechanism. The hip belt holster makes it easy to fire the canister from the hip, while the chest holster puts the canister right in front of you. No bear spray is hotter than Frontiersman, yet the spray is completely safe for bears, causing only temporary burning and discomfort. (The EPA sets strict limits on the amount of heat-bearing chemicals used in bear repellent sprays.) And the Frontiersman has been field tested in some of the most challenging environments in North America, including the Elmendorf Air Force Base in Elmendorf, Alaska, and Brown Bear Resources in Missoula, Montana.

Test it before you really need it. I almost got killed by not knowing how to use this. I encountered a couple of bears in Harriman State Park so I decided to test it. To my surprise nothing came out! I was about 300 feet from a huge bear with no protection. I finally realized that the problem was that I wasn’t holding my finger correctly. The bottom part of your thumb needs to rest entirely on the trigger as shown in the second picture. Do not press the end of the trigger (Like in the first picture)as it will not spray.

This stuff is great. I don’t mess with those tiny useless containers of pepper spray anymore. I ride a bike a lot and have had several dogs try to attack me. I can blast them with this while they are still a little far away. Most times it scares them off without the fog even hitting them. They can see it coming and are usually fast enough to duck and run away. Of course, be prepared to use it on the dog owners who let aggressive dogs run lose.

As an avid outdoors woman, I spend a fair amount of time camping and hiking – often in places where few humans go. This sets me up for encounters with wild animals. While I am an ardent animal lover and absolutely love being that deeply entrenched in the natural world, I do understand the potential dangers this poses.

Great on bears, even better on humans

This is an effective alternative to deadly force for self defense. This has greater burn, greater body coverage and allows greater distance between you and an assailant than regular pepper stray cans. As with all “weapons”, practice its usage many times before trusting your ability to use it effectively under stress. Be safe.

I have had to use this on several occasions during my bike commute to work. I ride at 03:30 in the morning down roads without lights for approximately two miles, by a protected park. There are coyotes, bears and panthers and sometimes you can hear something following you but cannot see it, so I give two squirts behind me and whatever was tracking me is gone. I keep it in a side pocked of a small backpack that I wear on the front of me so that I can use the spray easily and not stop riding.

It works.

Non-lethal self defense, but perpetrators may wish they had been shot instead. Also provides for safety while hiking and camping against bears.

Had to use it on Mount Washburn while visiting Yellow Stone National park. Worked out pretty good but it doesn’t go as far as it’s advertised or at least mine didn’t. Luckily my friend had one too so together it worked out well. I would carry one extra as a back up if you are regular camper just for safety.
