AMAZING camping pad with one potential design flaw. Still, this long-time Therm-a-rest user is a convert! UPDATED 2016!!

Before I review the Klymit Insulated Static V, a bit of background is due. I’ve used therm-a-rest pads exclusively for the last 15 years. I’ve recently become frustrated with my pads as I’m a side sleeper and they simply didn’t provide the level of comfort and weight balance that I desired. In my quest for comfort and light weight, I considered several new pads from therm-a-rest and Big Agnes. However, these pads cost anywhere from $80-$150+. I simply couldn’t justify the cost (especially since the Klymit pad frequently can be purchased for less than $70). But then I came across the Klymit Static V and everything changed.

A Good Sleeping Pad

I’ve started doing more camping over the past several years, and initially purchased a self-inflating sleeping pad that inflates to about 3/4″ and serves to put a little insulating space between the ground and my body, but when I began looking into lightweight backpacking, I needed a different solution both for size and weight. I landed on the Klymit Insulated Static V sleeping pad, and am very satisfied with my purchase, though there are a couple of slight issues I’ve experienced with it.

Packs small, easy to use

I usually use an air bed when car camping. However, since my most recent trip involved an airplane, packing small became a necessity. I’d gone to REI to try out some pads and knew that a smooth pad wouldn’t work for me. I did lots of research online and finally chose the Klymit pad. It worked well for me. It’s easy to inflate, requiring only 15-20 breaths. At 23″ wide, it’s a bit wider than many other pads. When you sit down on it, you do hit the ground, but once your weight is evenly distributed after lying down, it’s very comfortable. Overnight temperatures were in the low 50s, and I never had the sensation of cold seeping up from the ground. I slept well all four nights. When it was time to break camp, it took no more than five minutes to deflate the pad, fold, roll, and tuck it into its sack. It actually fits in its sack, by the way. No wrestling required!

Worth the money hands down

Took it camping to the ocala national Forest and it worked perfect, very fast to inflate , very comfortable and kept me warm! I am a side sleeper and it worked perfect but also did a little stomach sleeping and it was also very very comfortable

This pad is comfortable and sturdy easy to deflate and pack in a small size extremely happy with it.small enough to be used inside sleeping bag and lost no air during night. I found it more comfortable than large twin size air mattress .

Good for a budget conscience backpacker

I like this pad a lot but at 2.5 inches thick it just barely gets tall enough to keep my hips off the ground (6′ tall, 190lbs) so keep that in mind if you are a larger person or a side sleeper. That said, I still find it very comfy and warm. It also packs down quite small and inflates quicker than a thermorest and at half the price.

Gone are my younger years when I was able to sleep on a solid foam mat. I bought this because of the extra width, insulation, cost, compactness, and light weight as compared to other quality sleeping mats to use when I’m bicycle touring and for backpacking trips. I’m a side sleeper and found this mat comfortable to sleep on during my first overnight camping trip this past weekend. So far, I’m very pleased with the purchase.

WEIRD. Surprisingly comfortable!!

Now that my son is in Boy Scouts, I find that I’m camping a lot more than before. It has been years since I last camped and things have changed a LOT in that time! First, ground pads actually provide padding from the ground!! Who knew?? I purchased this a couple months ago and have used it on 3 camping trips, so I think I can give a decent review. Here goes:

Since I do sleep occasionally on the hard wood floor and a yoga mat at home, I thought I would be plenty comfy with this on a grassy campsite when backpacking. I am not saying it feels harder than my floors, but for the money and all the rave reviews, I thought it would feel better. I think the keeping you insulated from the cold ground part works well, as does the weight and size for backpacking. I just didn’t find it much comfier than the ground. I am also really wary of the valve, I feel like i might yank it right out of the mat by accident. Mat was almost too long for my one person backpacking tent. I am not saying its an awful product, but I was disappointed.
