big surprise in a little package

I bought a bag over the weekend to test how edible this stuff was before my camping trip next month. i gotta say, this stuff really impressed me. it certainly doesn’t compare to something you’d get at a nice restaurant, but for something that’s freeze-dried and you only have to add hot water to, it was very impressive. i place the flavor somewhere around stouffer’s oven baked lasagna. it’s all crumbled up in the packaging, so it looks more like a can of chef boyardee lasagna.
Excellent product, but watch the calorie count

Bottom line up front: This type of food is a great choice for an emergency food supply, especially for sheltering in place or evacuating by vehicle. The #10 cans have a 25-year shelf life, so you can buy them and not worry about rotating your stock for a couple of decades. The biggest downside is that once opened, they need to be used up right away.
Top notch backcountry food

I have been backpacking in the wilderness for almost ten years and go out every month throughout the year. So needless to say I have purchased dozens of different manufacturers dehydrated meals.
Tastes Good, Though Not as Balanced as Chicken Fried Rice

My interest in Mountain House foods comes from the aspect of emergency preparedness, not camping. Articles I’ve read recommend that you have a minimum of 1-3 months water and food. With that in mind, I evaluated the Chicken Teriyaki With Rice and Vegetables on these points:
GREAT dried meal at a good price, better than DICK’s Sporting goods prices

Mountain House dried meals are the best of the ones I have used over the years. Some selections are better than others of course and the Chicken Teriyaki with Rice for this review is really good. It’s tasty without being overly salted like some competitors. The portion is accurate and filling. In this case the portion of chicken to rice is decent for these kinds of meals admittedly smaller pieces to allow for rapid re-hydration. However, there was a decent amount. You can make it wherever you are so long as you can measure and boil the water (I recommend carrying a Sunday Spoon (long handled spoon) with you. I will buy again.
Pro Paks are the best

I use these when catches are low and to occasionally supplement my hunts and other trips while I am harvesting fish and game.
Mountain House can’t make a bad meal

Mountain House makes the best dehydrated meals hands down. I’ve tried almost every brand with similar recipes and none have been close to being as good as Mountain House. This Chicken Teriyaki tastes more like a sweet and sour chicken dish, but either way it’s delicious. Be sure to use a little less water than instructed and let it sit an extra five minutes than what it says. After pouring in the boiling water be sure to mix it up well with a spoon so they’re aren’t any dry chunks hiding at the bottom. During the cook time be sure to smush the contents in the bag around to mix it up. I like to sit mine on its side instead of upright while its cooking, I feel like this cooks it more evenly. I weigh about 140lbs and one of these will fill me up for dinner while I’m out in the backcountry.
