Tasty and filling, with a bit of a kick

Recently, I have been trying out a variety of freeze-dried entrees from different companies to see what I like before stocking up. My rating is based on taste, when the entrée is prepared with only water and without any extras such as Tabasco, cheese or seasonings. The chili mac with beef is among the tastiest of the Mountain House offerings. Each serving has a generous amount of beef combined with beans, macaroni, and a tomato sauce that has a spicy kick without setting your mouth on fire. The sauce has a nice consistency that is neither too soupy nor too congealed. Similarly, the ratio of meat, macaroni and beans was just right for a satisfying balance of flavors.

Ok, so in my church sometimes not enough food arrives for something. This may be hard for some of you to imagine, but yes. Instead of ordering last minute pizza delivered, the last time I was anxious about the amount of food, I opened a can of this stuff and had a big casserole dish of really very presentable stuff in 10 minutes. It helps that the hot water was already ready for hot tea. I even had a restaurant owner taste it (without knowing where it came from) and she pronounced it good. The kids especially snarfed it up. For my bland taste buds, it’s just a little spicy, but for everyone else in the world, that means just right.

The chili mac is my favorite of the Mountain House offerings and I highly recommend …

NOM NOM NOM I use Mountain House products at home for everyday use as well as on the jobsite and on the trail. The chili mac is my favorite of the Mountain House offerings and I highly recommend it. If you are looking for a good meal anytime, anywhere you can make water hot, you can have a tasty and nutritious meal in minutes (I must admit, the speed and ease, coupled with the price point, almost makes it cost-effective to eat freeze dried!)

This was the first Mountain House product that I had tried. I’ve ended ordering a couple more of these after trying. I’ve also tried a number of different ones. Of the eight or so I’ve tried, all but the chicken and rice have been really good. The chili favor has a nice kick to it but not overly spicy, and the macaroni is good but make sure you let it sit the full 10 minutes before eating to let it soften up. No issues recommending he Chili Mac – and if you’re like me you’ll probably end up cracking it open and eating it for lunches too. It does say it lasts 25 years, but that is prior to opening. Once you open it states you have about 2-3 weeks.

Mountain House reminds me of backpacking with my dad when I was 10 through high school (I’m 28 now). So, when I convinced my girlfriend to come backpacking with me, I told her freeze-dried food was part of the experience and picked up a variety of these. While there are a few brands to choose from, Mountain House has always been the standard for me because:

Product is light weight, even more so when you portion it out yourself from the large can. We used it in the two portion pouch size before it was discontinued at our local store. Taste great, filling, I would recomend as our favorite instant food choice.

I must say I was amazed by the flavor and texture of this product. I bought a few meals to taste test before going camping in a few weeks and the Mountain House Mac and Cheese was one I tested.

I’ve bought several different cans of Mountain House food but the chili mac with beef is the first one we have tried. We were very surprised and pleased by the taste of the food. It’s definitely not homemade but it’s definitely tasty. The seasoning and texture was great, especially for freeze dried food. I didn’t add any salt or pepper I only used a little less water than was recommended. It’s most definitely good enough to keep around for emergency situations. I will be purchasing more of this brand knowing that if we do ever have to eat it, it is worth eating. Also with the 30 year shelf life it can sit around for a little while.
