A revolutionary product

In the hands of people that do not have and have never had electricity this is a life changing product. But, lets rein in the claims a bit. It takes direct sun to get a full charge and from my tests on the 6 lanterns that I bought it is about an hour per hour trade off, hour of sun, hour of good light. On a day of fairly bright overcast my lantern just charged enough to give a little more than an hour of bright light and I am at 9 degrees north latitude in Panama. On the sunny days I get 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours of light that everyone sitting around my four foot round table can easily read by, even my 71 year old eyes have no problem. I would like to get more of these lights into the hands of the Indian people here, many of these villages have never had light after the sun went down. This is not darkest Africa, this is Panama, you know the canal, the huge new Trump Hotel, beyond Panama city are many that still commute by paddling dugout canoes. Anyway I will be ordering more Luci Lights.

My applications for this light: First, I am an expedition canoeist (actually, a river-rat floatfisherman who prefers to stay Out There for a week or more at a time). Haven’t used mine for that yet (water’s not warm enough yet), but I have one big trip already planned for this season and no doubt that the Luci will become my favorite camping lantern EVER. Second, I smoke, but not in the house or vehicle. I’ve been using this lantern every night since I got it as I go out to the BBQ area to smoke. I read constantly, even taking a book into the grocery store to read in the checkout line. This thing is great for reading at a picnic table with no moon in the tree-filled Arkansas Ozarks night.

I bought six of these to give grandchildren for birthday presents, inspired by my oldest one who likes to stay up late reading in bed but who uses up flashlight batteries like no tomorrow when she falls asleep. No more problem with that! And two weeks after they arrived our power went out for several days with winter storms…and there they were, charging up nicely on the kitchen table and allowing us to read the evenings and nights away without worrying that the cats would knock them over, unlike candles or oil lamps. Maybe there’s a little quality control thing going on– one takes a charge poorly and lasts for about 3 hours, and its sister, charging on the same table side-by-side, easily lasts 7 hours. The others have all been good for 6-8 hours with no problem. I love Luci!

If they just didn’t fudge the numbers…

I gave Luci to my family as gifts and they were so impressed! They already used the light during an unexpected power outage. I also took Luci on a recent work trip to Ethiopia where electricity was unreliable. I actually set up the light one day in the office when the power went out so we could continue working. I also showed Luci to families that don’t have light in their homes and they couldn’t believe that it didn’t burn their hands or cause indoor smoke. Such an amazing and important invention.
