For the price paid, I would recommend this handheld to any ham operator. I did purchase a Comet SMA 24J antenna (from an Amazon vendor) and I can access several local 2 meter/70 cm repeaters from my location. The included antenna is marginal at best unless you live quite close to a repeater or you are on the upper floor and next to a window of your condo. Build quality is excellent and audio reports likewise. Although it would be your choice to purchase the programming cable/software for this radio, for this unit and two other BAOFengs I own, manual programming presented no problems. WP4AOH’s website has an excellent guide with photos and programming examples that make the task straightforward. Although the package arrived in good condition, the vendor could have used sturdier outside packaging. (boxed with padding as opposed to a tyvek envelope). (Shipping time was only 2 days.)
great buy for the money

Interested in “Ham Radio” the BAOFENG UV-5R dual band Radio Transceiver with 3800mah battery is a great way to get started. I have been listening to the 2 meter and 70cm bands on the Pennsylvania repeater system and have heard conversations from several hundred miles from my location. Several of newly licensed hams “Technician Class” spoke of using one of BAOFENG radios. If you are interested in becoming a “Ham Radio Operator”, I suggest purchasing the UV-5R along with a programing kit from […] Also The ARRL Ham Radio license manual ( Level 1Technician ) from Amazon.com and a better antenna with SMA-Female connection .

When I first stumbled across this radio, I was looking for a radio that could perform on par with my dedicated uhf and vhf radios that I have for my job in Fire Rescue. Seeing as this radio is part 90 certified by the FCC for commercial use (and its price point well below $100) I figured I’d give it a try. I bought it along with a programing cable and a 14.5 inch ExpertPower antenna. After programming and a week or so worth of use, I have to say this little radio has blown past all of my expectations! I’m able to hit all the repeaters of my dedicated radios (a Motorola PR400 vhf and a Motorola XPR6550 uhf) when using the stock antenna, and even more with the 14.5 inch antenna installed. It should also be noted the terrain where I live is very hilly and radio signal range with handheld units are rather limited. Sound quality is just as clear as the other radios used in my department. The battery life has also been great, it came charged out of the box and after sitting on the charger the first night it can last a couple of days with moderate use. As for the quality of this radio, it’s made with a pretty solid feeling plastic, and has already survived me dropping it on concrete without a scratch, however I’m not sure how well the buttons will hold up to long term use, as they stick out from the body of the radio more than other radios I’ve used, but they’ve held up well so far. The downside to this radio as many other reviews have said is the programming. I used the miklor help site to get my cable to work with my computer, And CHIRP software to actually program the radio frequencies. Getting it set up and programmed took less than three hours total on a machine running windows 7. Overall I highly recommend this radio, for the price you can’t beat it, and the quality is excellent as well! I’ve already talked some of the guys I work with into getting one to try out themselves.
Great radio for its price

I had heard about the Baofeng UV-5R through a friend from my local SAR unit and he showed me his radio and I liked how the radio felt has I held it in my hand and also how loud it was on a few local repeaters and more, so, I decided to get one of my own – this radio is now my EDC (everyday carry radio)as I also carry two other radios with me as well in my Go bag as back-ups.
Great beginner’s Radio

I’m completely new to these kinds of radios, and heard a lot of praise for the UV-5R model of radios, so I decided to give it a shot. For the price I didn’t really expect much, but when I opened it up and started playing around with the radio, I felt like I got a lot more than what I paid for.
Lots of features, easy to use, "mostest for the leastest"

For $38.52, you get a lot of radio. I bought the 3800Mah and several accessories, received it played with it for a day and ordered a 2nd one (1800mah) 2 days later. ($26.00 for the small battery unit) I’d say this is the “mostest for the leastest” you’ll be able to find. The unit has, in my opinion, an undeserved reputation for being hard to program manually. READ the instructions carefully or better yet, watch some YouTube videos on the matter. BUT, I assure anyone, it is very simple to program with “CHIRP.” (which is free to download) Chirp works in WIN 10, WIN 7 for sure and LINUX (Elementary OS and MINT so far tested – since it ran in those two, I’m virtually certain it will work in UBUNTU as well. (to be tested next)) I simply can hardly believe what it does. I ordered the NAGOYA NA-771 antenna with the second one. (didn’t make a lot of difference on receive – the receiver seems quite sensitive already) I use it for 2 meter and 70 cm ham bands. Now if the wife will just study a bit, I’ll get her a ham license too! (she can have the “little battery” one)

Great radio for a great price! At the time it was $35.99 which was only $7 more than the regular UV-5R with smaller battery!
Great price for radio with the extended battery

The receive is much better on this one than my older UV-5R radio. The battery latch didn’t first latch the battery. After about 5-6 times of hitting the bottom of the battery hard with the palm of my hand it latched easily, and after a piece of plastic fell from the latch area. Nothing broken but it appeared it was additional molding that didn’t break away during production. Great price for radio with the extended battery.
Great budget/ beginner radio

I am a new ham radio operator but I do have experience with radios having worked in a fire department. Let me start off by saying this radio works every bit as good as the $800 duty Kenwood and Motorola radios we used in the fire department. The radio is small, light, compact but amazingly it still feels well made and durable. The buttons feel high quality and have a nice crisp feel when pressed. The stock rubber duck antenna preforms quite well considering it is a rubber duck. I have no problems hitting repeaters 30 miles away. I have also been impressed with how durable theses radios are. I accidentally dropped my radio from standing and it hit the ground so hard it bounced. On examination I was surprised to find it did not even have a single scratch on it.
