My brother works in the mountains as a property manager. They get lots of snow in the winter. He also goes hunting by himself a lot.

My son and I play around with survival items, We’ve never been in a survival situation but its something we enjoy doing together. I only say that so you will know we are not survival experts, For example my initial thought was it didn’t work very well. I didn’t understand you have to get through the applied coating down to the actual stick, which does take a few scrapes. We received this product and literally within minutes my son had it just about mastered the art of “spark throwing” lol. We have already started fires using everything from cotton balls to just wood shavings. So far this product has worked wonderfully. I am extremely confident should we ever have a survival need to use this item we would have little issue with it. I didn’t buy it for the compass and I don’t feel it is a great tool, However, it does work if you take a bit of extra time with it. The whistle is a bit tricky as well but follow the instructions (yes, instructions on a blow whistle”) and it will work as well. I gave this item 5 stars because its main purpose is to start a fire and it does that extremely well. The other features seem to be just kinda after thoughts. I would not depend on the compass although it does seem to work ok. Hope this review helps someone.
Started a fire on my first day using it.

Received this just yesterday and I have already started a fire with it. First impression taking the SurvivalSPARK fire starter out of the package is how sturdy it feels. The rod feels heavy and solid. I was able to get a spark right away. The spark shot about 2 inches past the rod. As such I had to see if it would actually light something.
Dogs can’t help start fires, if they say they can, they are lying to you. 😉

Good spark from this, the whistle and compass are a bonus. I had no problems starting a fire from it (despite ‘help’ from three curious large dogs and my 17 year old offspring) and will be adding it to my kit immediately. I would recommend picking up a magnesium block to shave from though, I can’t see this lasting over time with repeated shaving, but for an emergency or survival kit, it’s worthwhile.
Use saw side to scrape black off, use flat side to create sparks

This makes tremendous sparks, started a fire within 10 strikes, and that is only because I had crappy tinder. No need to shave magnesium into a pile, just shave off with saw side until stick is silver instead of black, then use flat side to create sparks. Note: Use jagged side to scrape off black Magnesium, then use flat side to strike for huge sparks. I didn’t know this originally, and was shocked at how difficult it was to create a spark, nonetheless one that would reach the tinder pile, lol. This is a solid item I just hope it really is good for thousands of strikes. Also compass was frozen at first, but started working after a couple of minutes. For the life of me, can’t get the whistle to work, but the compass and fire starter get a solid 4 stars. Going right into my survival cache.
Handy, does its job

Some of my friends think I’m a conspiracy theorist or maybe just a little paranoid. I created bug out bags and when I saw this product discounted and up for review in exchange for my opinion, I knew I needed it.
